Alpha-carotene is a member of the carotenoid family and one of the most abundant carotenoids in a healthy diet. Since the body converts alpha-carotene into vitamin A, alpha-carotene is called a precursor of vitamin A. However, as a vitamin A precursor, alpha-carotene is only half as potent as beta-carotene, another well-known carotenoid. On the other hand, as an antioxidant, alpha-carotene is more potent than beta-carotene.
