These ester groups have strong electrophilicity and are easily attacked by nucleophilic reagents. Therefore, dimethyl phthalate can participate in a variety of nucleophilic reactions, such as acid-catalyzed ester hydrolysis, nucleophilic substitution reactions, etc. Dimethyl phthalate can undergo transesterification, polycondensation, hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, and hydrolysis reactions.

Polyester film is mainly used as electrical insulation material and film (such as the base material of movie film, X-ray film, photographic film, chemical book, audio tape, video tape, computer tape, etc.). The most common use of polyester resin is to make fiber, which is used in fabrics, fishing nets, carpets, tire cords, etc. It can also be used to produce plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate.
